The UK Economy series of papers

IrelandThe UK economy series of papers aims to bring to the fore some of the challenges and opportunities facing the United Kingdom across all sectors of the economy.

The papers challenge some of the "Sacred cows" that have become shrouded in dogma to an extent that instead of protecting the institution or sector concerned, actually stifles it and threatens its very existence. The papers also aim to identify the key issues that threaten a successful economic recovery and long-term sustainability.

Each paper gives a point of view about the future. As a firm, we do not align ourselves to a particular view; the papers are here to provoke thought and discussion.

These bodies often have an important function - frequently in the place of civil servants. Tony Blair promised to rid us of these undemocratic and costly organisations. What happened?

IcebergH2, H2O or CO2?

What happens when the oil runs out? Wind won't do it, solar won't do it and nobody likes nuclear? Is Hydrogen the answer? We are an island nation, surrounded by water - could we extract hydrogen from water and have an endless, cheap energy source?

Unfinished buildingIs the UK spent?

The UK has spent hundreds of billions of pounds on banks; public sector spending continues to rise and the Tax take falls; the funding gap for UK public sector pensions is about 85% of GDP (which is shrinking). Is this sustainable or even responsible?
